Virtual Private Servers

Virtual private servers (not to be confused with AECNU Reseller VServer Plans) fill in the void between shared web hosting services and dedicated hosting services, giving independence from other customers of the service in software terms but at less cost than a physical dedicated server. A Virtual Private Server runs its own copy of its independent operating system, customers normally have superuser or root level access to that operating system of their individual VPS Server, and can install almost any software that runs on the OS.

There are of course some disadvantages as well to VPS Hosting. Certain software does not run well in a virtualized environment, including anti-virus clients, firewalls, and virtualizers themselves. Most VPS providers place further restrictions, but they are generally lax compared to those in shared hosting environments. Due to the number of virtualization clients typically running on a single server, a VPS generally has limited processor time, RAM, and disk space - therefore not achieving the performance of a physical dedicated server among other things.
